With her back turned to the camera, the subject in “The Language of Braid and Brass” invites the viewer into an unspoken conversation—one that echoes through Lagos’s bustling streets, salons, markets, and memories. Her braided crown, adorned with golden motifs, becomes more than aesthetic; it is a sculptural archive of cultural resilience, threading ancestral language into the fast-paced rhythm of urban life.

In a city like Lagos—relentless, expressive, and unpredictable—hair becomes both personal and political, a form of quiet protest, pride, and presence. The staff she holds evokes regality and guardianship, suggesting a ritualistic grounding amid the chaos of contemporary existence. Her silence, her turned gaze, speaks to the mental fortitude required to exist in a space that demands visibility yet often denies rest.

This work reframes beauty and tradition as tools of resistance, especially in the context of Lagos—a city that constantly reinvents itself while carrying echoes of the past.
